The Hawks have confirmed that a formal investigation will be conducted into allegations of corruption against cellular giant MTN.
This has also been welcomed by DA MP, David Maynier, who called on the Hawks to probe allegations of corruption related to MTN's license in Iran.
This followed allegations in a US court which identified former MTN chief executive Phuthuma Nhleko, and a small group of senior employees, as being behind the alleged corruption.
Hawks spokesperson, colonel Macintosh Polela, confirmed that there is a need for further investigation.
"The Hawks have gone through an assessment process to test the strength of the allegations against MTN and we have come to a conclusion that we needed to do a formal investigation. What we have to keep into consideration is the fact that this matter is also being investigated outside the country and that witnesses will have to testify outside the country and eventually in a court of law in South Africa" Polela said.
