Guard arrested for snooping and stealing coffee and sugar in prosecutor's office

Security guard caught on camera going through sensitive documents

A Security officer stationed at the Klerksdorp Court building is facing a charge of housebreaking and theft after he was caught on camera entering a prosecutor's office, sifting through her things and stealing coffee and sugar.

A spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) in North West, Henry Mamothame, said the 50-year-old Kgangetsile Motsumi was arrested by the Hawks on Thursday.

He says the alleged incident dates back to a Sunday in July when he entered the office of a senior prosecutor using a key.

Mamothame says the prosecutor had suspicions of unregulated entries into her office when she was not around and decided to install a camera, that she linked to her mobile device.

He said on the day of the incident when the prosecutor went to her office to collect her gown she noticed that the camera was unplugged.

She then checked her recorded footage and saw Motsumi going through her drawers and documents, before helping himself to coffee and sugar.

The NPA says on the footage he was seen unplugging the camera.

Mamothame says other prosecutors also complained about stuff disappearing from their offices, although this cannot be linked to Motsumi.

The accused will be back in court on the 12th of September for further investigation.

The Director of Public Prosecutions in North West welcomed the arrest, Dr Rachel Makhari, who expressed her concern over the matter since they work on high-profile cases.

Motsumi is out on warning.
