A man who police believe was part of a cash-in-transit robbery gang died a gruesome death when a G4S vehicle was bombed on Main Reef Road in Randfontein on Wednesday.
Police spokesperson, Colonel Athlenda Mathe, said the body of the man whose head was blown off was found at the scene.
She said members of the Bekkersdal police who were escorting awaiting trial prisoners to court came under fire when they came across the robbery in progress.
However, neither the police members nor any of the prisoners were injured.
Mathe said police found that the G4S cash vehicle had already been bombed while the body of the man was found next to the vehicle.
Mathe said the other robbers fled in Ford Ranger bakkie and a BMW, taking an undisclosed amount of cash.
"A burnout 3 series BMW was also found at the scene and it has been established that it was stolen in Kagiso in December," she said.
