The Department of Education has expressed their shock following the tragic news of a Grade 1 learner who was stabbed to death at his Primary School in Makapanstad in North West Province.
The child was stabbed multiple times by a Grade 11 learner from another school on Wednesday morning.
A spokesperson for the Department Elijah Mhlanga says it is believed that the suspect knew the victim as he was in a relationship with his sister. He reportedly spent the night sleeping in the toilets to wait for his victim.
The suspect and his girlfriend allegedly had an argument when the teenager decided to target her little brother out of revenge.
According to police the community became very upset and grabbed the boy and assaulted him. A Spokesperson Adele Myburgh says they were then called out to the scene where they rescued him from the hands of the community.
The 17-year-old suspect was first treated in hospital before being arrested.
He will make his first appearance on Friday.
