Finance Minister, Pravin Gordhan, stepped off the plane from overseas and headed straight to the ANC's headquarters at Luthuli House.
According to reports, Gordhan was there to pay his respects following the passing of ANC stalwart, Ahmed Kathrada.
The Finance Minister was instructed by President Jacob Zuma to cancel his international investor road-show and return home.
No reasons were given by the Presidency for this, fueling speculation that a cabinet shuffle is imminent.
On Monday the Rand took a tumble on the news which also sparked widespread political reaction.
The so-called Gordhan "recall" also came on the eve of a court hearing underway which effectively pits the Minister against the controversial Gupta family after four South African banks closed their bank accounts. The Minister indicated that, by law, he could not intervene in the matter, as the Gupta-owned, Oakbay was seeking.
Oakbay is also seeking an order that will hold the Finance Minister personally liable for costs of the applications.
