Gordhan not given reasons for recall, tells reporters to "ask the Presidency"

Finance Minister, Pravin Gordhan, said he has not yet been given reasons why he was called back from London where he was engaged in an international investor roadshow.

Gordhan, his deputy and other officials, were instructed by President Jacob Zuma to return home on Monday, fuelling speculation of a cabinet shuffle and the Rand tanking in its wake.

A statement by the Presidency gave no reasons for the instruction.

On his return to South Africa on Tuesday, Gordhan went straight to the ANC headquarters at Luthuli House and later put in an appearance at the North Gauteng High Court.

The Finance Minister is seeking a declaratory order from the court clarifying whether or not he can legally intervene in the matter between the Gupta family business Oakbay and four South African banks.  Legal argument in that matter will continue on Wednesday.

Earlier, Gauteng judge president, Dunstan Mlambo, granted an application by the Gupta-owned company Oakbay to have details of irregular financial transactions struck out from the submissions of the Finanical Intelligence Centre.

The FIC, in court papers, had reportedly listed dozens of suspicious banking transactions by the Gupta-owned company.

In his ruling, Justice Mlambo said there was merit in the Oakbay application and ordered that the respective portions that are to be struck out were clearly identified in the application.

Judge Mlambo said the striking out application brought by the Minister of Finance was also granted.

The court reserved costs in the applications until the finalisation of the main court application by the Minister Pravin Gordhan.

Approached by the media outside the courtroom, Minister Gordhan would not be drawn on the discussions he had at Luthuli House.

Asked by a reporter why he was recalled, Gordhan said "I didn't recall myself" and to a follow up question if the Presidency had given any reasons, Gordhan said "ask the Presidency", before leaving.
