Gift of the Givers
The humanitarian organisation Gift of the Givers is stepping in to provide support to residents of Joe Slovo informal settlement in Langa, Cape Town, who have lost everything in a devastating fire.
Three hundred shacks were reportedly destroyed in the blaze which swept through the informal settlement yesterday.
Many of the homeowners were reportedly in the Eastern Cape for the Easter long weekend.
More than 1000 people have now been left without shelter.
Gift Of the Giver spokesperson, Ali Sablay, said it was inundated with calls from residents of Joe Slovo.
He said the fire was only contained in the early hours of Sunday morning as strong winds made it difficult to battle the blaze. "Fortunately there was no loss of life or any injuries."
Sablay said their teams will be providing urgent humanitarian assistance in the form of hot meals, water, baby-care packs, blankets, and mattresses," he said.
He said Gift of the Givers will be on the scene for the next few days to support the traumatised residents.
"It's a very bleak Easter for these families," he said.
