A George doctor and his wife are recovering in hospital following a dramatic robbery at their home in the early hours of Friday morning in which one of the assailants was killed.
Police spokesperson, captain Bernadine Steyn, say the home-owners, a 57-year-old man and his 54-year-old wife, were in the bedroom when he heard a noise.
"The husband took his .357 magnum revolver and unlocked the bedroom door to investigate. When he opened the door he was assaulted by the suspects during which the victim sustained several open wounds in his head and a gunshot wound in his arm. The suspects also assaulted his wife and demanded that she open the safe. She sustained open wounds in her neck and head," Steyn said.
"The victims, who are currently in a hospital in George in a serious but stable condition, alerted their neighbour who contacted SAPS. The body of one of the suspects was found outside the house with a gunshot wound in his chest. His identity is still unknown."
Steyn says the circumstances surrounding the incident is still unclear and being investigated.
She says "the .357 magnum revolver is missing and it is unclear at this stage whether other items were also taken from the house."
"We have opened a Murder and House robbery case docket for investigation and anyone with information is requested to contact the investigating officer, Warrant officer Allie du Plessis at the George Detective branch on 044 803 4715/4," Steyn added.
