The wife of a general in the South African National Defence Force appeared in court on Wednesday on a charge of fraud.

The National Prosecuting Authority said Nombasa Ntsondwa-Ndlovu was arrested in the morning and appeared in court where she was granted bail of R80 000.

She was ordered not to contact any of the witnesses in the matter and to hand in her passport to the investigating officer.

NPA spokesperson, Sipho Ngwema, said the charges stem from a contract of approximately R24 million that the SANDF had awarded to Ndhlovu’s company, Ukhumbe Marine, to transport SANDF equipment back from African countries to South Africa.

“It is alleged that she provided false information/documents as part of the tender process,” he said.

Ngwema said the general’s wife was awarded a second contract of R103 million to transport SANDF equipment, but this was cancelled when the soldiers were recalled from service in the African countries.

He said Ntsondwa-Ndlovu then claimed R30 million from the SANDF for expenses incurred before the contract was cancelled and allegedly provided false documents to show the expenses.

Her next court date is on 9 December.
