JOHANNESBURG, October 3 (ANA) – After visiting three troubled secondary schools on the East Rand on Tuesday Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi said his department had spent R160 million on getting students ready for their National Senior Certificate (NSC) final exams, which begin in three weeks.
“We have a military style arrangement, everything is ready,” Lesufi said.
Lesufi made his remarks after he visisted B.B. Myataza Secondary School, Phandimfundo Secondary School and H.B. Nyathi Secondary School, to engage with students and expert tutors as they prepare for the NSC final exam.
His department identified these three schools as “high risk” because they are affected by drugs, violence and poor results. L
Lusufi said he was aware that two students had committed suicide “because of exam stress”.
At the B.B Myataza Secondary School, the MEC took time to speak to teachers, where he revealed that: “We have appointed the best people who have achieved over 70 percent at their schools. This is a demonstration of our commitment to your success”.
District Director of Gauteng East Somikazi Chabalala said that the Secondary School Improvement Programme was being run every Saturday in order to prepare the learners for their NSC final exams. As many as 646 students are attending the B.B Myataza camp.
“Learners are tired but we motivate them all the time,” Chabalala said.
“Current trend is good attendance in Gauteng east.”
The NSC exams begin on 23 October 2017.
