A motorist has been arrested for driving at a speed of 198km/h in a 120km zone on the N1 north in Gauteng on Saturday morning, the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) said.
“He was granted R3000 bail,” RTMC spokesman Simon Zwane said.
Another motorists was arrested travelling at 155km/h on the N8 in the Free State.
“This happens at a time when traffic volumes have increased on the roads. The number of vehicles travelling out of Gauteng was recorded at 1100 an hour hour at 7am,” he said.
The RTMC warned motorists to reduce speed and respect the rules of the road.
“Speed is a major contributor to road deaths and those who are speeding are putting the lives of other road users at risk. Everyone is urged to resist this selfish and dangerous behaviour,” Zwane said. – African News Agency (ANA)
