Gauteng police arrested eight suspects and recovered three unlicensed rifles and a pistol, soon after a courier vehicle was robbed in Rustenburg on Wednesday.
Spokesperson, Captain Kay Makhubela said police also seized four stolen vehicles and recovered the suspected stolen property.
He said after being notified about the robbery, police despatched members from the Serious and Violent Crimes Unit, Rapid Response Services, and other law enforcement agencies.
He said the team proceeded to the Krugersdorp area where they spotted the four vehicles.
“The suspects sped off in different directions and a high-speed chase ensued that was followed by a shootout after the suspects started firing at the police,” he said.
Makhubela said six suspects were arrested in a Quantum mini-bus, another in an Iveco commercial vehicle, and the other suspect was in a Ford Ranger bakkie. He said a Lexus vehicle also used by the gang was found abandoned with a pistol inside.
He said the stolen goods were found in the commercial vehicle.
No one was injured during the shootout and the suspects are due to appear in court soon.
