Human rights icon Mahatma Gandhi's great-granddaughter, Ashish Lata Ramgobin, appeared in the Durban Magistrate's Court on Monday on charges of fraud.
She was released on R50 000 bail on condition that she check in with the investigating officer once a week, surrender her passport and not leave KwaZulu-Natal.
The 45-year-old allegedly stole more than R11 million from two businessmen.
The Hawks arrested her in her Durban home last Thursday evening.
She allegedly approached the two businessmen and asked them to invest in a business venture.
Ramgobin allegedly claimed she had won a R20-million tender to provide bedding to the Netcare hospital group.
She allegedly provided forged invoices and documents, claiming that three containers of linen were being shipped from India.
One of the men invested R5.2m and the other R6.2m.
An investigation uncovered that no such tender was ever advertised nor awarded.
She faces charges of theft, fraud and forgery.
