Free State police have opened an inquest docket after four bodies were found burnt beyond recognition inside a truck on a gravel road near Harrismith.
Spokesperson, Warrant-Officer Mmako Mophiring says they were summoned to the scene on Monday by a passerby who noticed the truck burning and tried to extinguish the flames but was not successful.
He says it was established that the truck belonged to a 35-year-old man from Qwa-qwa, who allegedly fetched his three children and wife to take them back home from her sister-in-law's house.
The children are two boys, aged one and 10, and an eight-year-old girl.
Mophiring said all five drove off to Qwaqwa in a truck but never arrived home.
He said an inquest docket was opened while the search is underway for the fifth person.
