Free State traffic officers hijacked in day of drama

File

Free State police are searching for an armed gang in three vehicles who kidnapped two traffic female traffic officers and wounded a female police officer in a later shootout.

Police spokesperson, Sergeant Mahlomola Kareli, said the drama began on Wednesday morning when the two traffic officers stopped a speeding car.

He said two other vehicles also stopped where the first car was pulled over, and the occupants pointed firearms at the two female traffic officers.

Kareli said both women were bundled into one of the cars and all three vehicles sped off.

He said members of the Vrede Stock Theft Unit responded to the incident and came across the three vehicles which resulted in a shootout.

“One SAPS member, a female Constable was shot and wounded in the right leg, and suspects managed to get in their vehicles and fled the scene.”

Kareli said the two traffic officers were disarmed and dropped in bushes near Walkerville where they were found unharmed.

He said the suspects, driving a gold-coloured Volvo, white Audi, and a grey Toyota Fortuner, are still at large and are considered armed and dangerous.
