A 31-year-old Free State mother has been jailed for 18 years for raping her three-year-old son in 2018.
Provincial police spokesperson, Lieutenant-Colonel Thabo Covane, said the woman was convicted on charges of attempted murder and other sexual offences.
He said the Mangaung Metro Family Violence Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit used the testimony of the elder brother, who was nine years old at the time, to achieve justice for his younger brother who was only three years old.
Covane said the mother was sentenced on Wednesday to a further eight years on a charge of attempted murder, for trying to strangle the child and submerge him in water, as well as a total of nine years on three counts of contravening the Sexual Offences Act.
He said all these sentences would run concurrently.
Covane said however that the woman was sentenced to 18 years on the rape charge.
