A Free State High Court Judge will appear in the Specialised Commercial Crime Court in Kroonstad on charges of theft, money laundering, and contempt of court.
The Hawks said that the Judge was served with a J175 court summons on Friday, which is a form of securing the attendance of an accused person in court.
Spokesperson, Brigadier Thandi Mbambo, said the judge’s court appearance relates to a Road Accident Fund matter that he handled when he was still practising as an attorney.
She said the claim was made on behalf of a six-year-old child who was involved in an accident in 2000.
“He handed over the client’s file with an amount of R 1 255 000 to another attorney, upon taking up an appointment as a Judge,” she said.
However, further investigations were conducted after the child’s mother reported the case against the second attorney who she claimed had misappropriated the funds.
Mbambo said it was then established that the RAF had paid out “an amount of R 3 142 089 70, meaning that the alleged action of the attorneys had prejudiced the victim to the tune of R 2.5 million.
“The current High Court sitting Judge will make his first court appearance on 9 March,” she said.
