The two prisoners who held a doctor hostage overnight at Mangaung Correctional Centre in Bloemfontein have been taken into custody by members of the police's tactical response team.
Police spokesperson, Billy Jones, said the doctor was released unharmed shortly after 7-30 on Tuesday morning.
The two knife-wielding inmates took the doctor and a nurse hostage on Monday morning, demanding to be transferred to a prison in Gauteng.
The nurse was released later in the day but the stand-off between police and the inmates continued through to Tuesday.
