A female doctor at Pelonomi Hospital in Bloemfontein bit off most of a man’s tongue as he allegedly attempted to rape her while she was sleeping in one of the staff quarters on Tuesday night.
Free State Health Department's spokesperson, Mondli Mvambi, said the alleged perpetrator then went to the Universitas Hospital for treatment.
Mvambi said he is currently at an undisclosed location and will be handed over to the police.
Meanwhile, some staff at Pelonomi Hospital held a brief protest on Wednesday demanding better safety at Free State Health facilities.
They want management to prioritise their safety concerns following the attack on the female doctor.
In 2010 a 35-year-old doctor, specialising in paediatrics at Pelonomi Hospital, was hit over the head with a brick and raped by three men.
