Free State police are searching for at least three suspects after a police officer was killed and a female officer wounded this weekend.
A spokesperson said they were on patrol on Saturday night when they stopped a vehicle travelling from Vierfontein in the direction of Orkney.
A spokesperson said as the officers approached the vehicle the suspects also got out and an argument ensued.
Shots were fired and the male Sergeant was fatally wounded while the female officer was shot in the leg.
The gunmen fled with their service pistols while the wounded officer frantically called for help.
Cases of murder, attempted murder, and robbery have been opened for further investigation.
