The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) has arrested four police officers from the Public Order Policing Unit in connection with the death of an innocent bystander during last week’s Wits University student protest in Braamfontein.
The 36-year-old Mthokozisi Ntumba was shot and killed, moments after stepping out of his doctor’s rooms which were nearby to where the student protest was taking place.
Ipid spokesperson Ndileka Cola says the four officers were arrested at around lunchtime on Monday.
They will appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday on a charge of murder, three charges of attempted murder and defeating the ends of justice.
