Four killed in accident following retirement village outing

Four residents of the Bult Retirement Village in Bultfontein in the Free State died on the scene of an accident on Thursday afternoon. The manager of the village, Gert Bezuidenhout, says the driver and five other passengers were injured when the minibus they were travelling in was hit from behind by a bakkie.

He says the accident took place about 6 km outside Bultfontein.

The residents were on their way back after an outing to Florisbad. Bezuidenhout says it is alleged that a bakkie, driving behind the minibus, wanted to overtake it but had to slack down to get back behind the minibus to make room for an oncoming truck.

He says in the process of getting back, it hit the minibus. Mediclinic Bloemfontein's Amanda Appelgryn says one patient died shortly after admission. The driver was taken to Life Rosepark Hospital, but has already been discharged.
