Four people have been killed and an estimated 40 others were injured on Thursday following a collision between a train, truck and light motor vehicle between Hennenman and Kroonstad in the Free State.
ER24 said that provincial fire and medical services were the first to arrive on the scene, finding that several carriages were lying on the side.
"A fire had broken out in one of the carriages and had begun to spread," said ER24 spokesperson, Russel Meiring.
He said ER24 paramedics, along with other services, began to evacuate the train and assess the patients while Fire Services began to battle the blaze.
"Upon assessment, paramedics found that the patients had sustained injuries ranging from minor to serious," he said.
Meiring said that the details surrounding "this incident are not yet known but local authorities were on the scene for further investigations".
