Four men were jailed for killing a police officer during a failed escape attempt by suspects held at the Esikhaleni police station in northern KwaZulu-Natal.
Police spokesperson, Captain Nqobile Gwala, said Warrant Officer John Ngwane was attacked by four suspects being held in the police cells in June 2015.
She said he was overpowered and strangled.
Gwala said Ngwane's colleague raised the alarm and the detainees were rearrested and returned to custody.
She said three of the four men were handed 18-year sentences on Tuesday while a fourth accused was sentenced to 12 years behind bars.
