Four people were killed and 11 others were injured in a collision between a car and a taxi on the R73 between Virginia and Welkom in the Free State.
Netcare 911 said that reports from the scene indicated that the “taxi and a V W Golf had crashed head-on.”
“Exact detail to the cause of the crash and preceding events however will form part of the police investigation,” Netecare spokesperson, Chris Botha.
“When paramedics from Netcare 911 and the provincial services as well as the fire department arrived at the scene, they found the roadway obstructed with accident debris and the twisted frames of the vehicles,” Botha said.
“After investigating, it was found that three people from the car and one taxi commuter tragically died on impact. Eleven others were found to have sustained injuries ranging from serious to moderate, some of them were still trapped in the twisted frames of the vehicles,” he said.
Botha said that firefighters worked tirelessly for an hour and a half using the Jaws of Life to free the injured from the wreckage of the taxi. “Paramedics from various services stabilised the injured at the scene before they transported them to a Welkom hospital for the care that they required,” he said.
