Four police members are behind bars on charges of murder and assault.
The Independent Police Investigative Directorate, IPID, said on Friday that the members were arrested on Friday at Honeydew police station in Gauteng.
IPID said the arrests followed allegations of the continued assault of two adult males in police custody.
“It is alleged that the four on-duty Constables continuously punched and kicked the two arrested males until the 39-year -old male dropped down whilst on the handcuffs,” said Sontaga Seisa, IPID’s acting spokesperson.
He said the fact that the deceased dropped down and started bleeding did not deter the Constables from assaulting and kicking him.
Sontaga said that IPID was informed about the incident after the deceased’s family visited the police station and discovered that their relative had died.
The police members will appear in court in Randburg on Monday.
