Four arrests at Beitbridge for explosives and endangered species

Pangolin found in a suspect's backpack

Four suspects are expected to appear in the Musina Magistrates Court on Monday following their arrests at the Beitbridge Border Post this weekend.

Spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba says in the first incident two men, aged 33 and 40 were arrested for bringing explosives into the country from Zimbabwe.

He says the men crossed the border with a truck and two trailers filled with 16 x 25 kg bags containing commercial explosives, 17 reels of detonating fuses, and 2 569 blasting cartridges.

Colonel Ledwaba says in the second incident two men aged 32 and 43 were arrested after a live pangolin and an elephant tusk valued at R1 million were found concealed in their bags.

He says these men also entered the country using a boat from Zimbabwe.
