DURBAN, October 8 (ANA) – Police have arrested four people in connection with the murders of five members of a family in an ambush in Mariannhill in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Sunday.
In the early hours of Sunday morning, police officers from the provincial organised crime task team, the national intervention unit, crime intelligence, Mariannhill detectives, and the KwaNdengezi police station launched an operation following leads at the Nteke area in Mariannhill, Captain Nqobile Gwala said.
Police proceeded to the Nteke area where they arrested three suspects for the murders. On Sunday afternoon the team proceeded to the KwaNdengezi area where they arrested the fourth suspect, who was found in possession of an unlicensed firearm and 11 rounds of ammunition. The arrested suspects were aged between 21 and 30, Gwala said.
KwaZulu-Natal acting police commissioner Maj-Gen Bhekinkosi Langa praised the team for “solving the case within two days”.
“We will not tolerate people who kill innocent members of our community. We are confident with the investigating team that they will present a well prepared docket to secure a successful prosecution of the culprits,” he said.
On Friday, Gwala said five members of a family were ambushed and killed in Mariannhill. “On 5 October 2017 at 11pm a family was accosted by unknown gunmen who fired multiple shots at the five members of the family, aged between 19 and 34, in [the] Nteke area, Mariannhill. Four of the family members died at the scene and the other victim died in hospital on arrival,” Gwala said.
This followed the murder of eight members of the Sibiya family on Wednesday in Ematimatolo.
