Founder of 'Right to Die' organisation, arrested for murder

A Cape Town professor who made international headlines in 2010 after giving his mother, who was suffering from terminal cancer, a lethal dose of morphine has been arrested on a charge of murder relating to the death of a friend.

Professor Sean Davison was expected to appear in the Cape Town Magistrate's Court on Wednesday after spending the night in police cells.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Andre Traut confirmed, "that a 57-year-old man was arrested on a charge of murder yesterday relating to an incident in Sea Point on 2013-11-02, which led to the death of a 43-year-old man".

The murder reportedly relates to the death of his friend Anrich Burger in 2013, who became a quadriplegic after a car crash.

Davison founded Dignity South Africa in 2011 to campaign for the legalisation of euthanasia in South Africa.

He served five months of house arrest in New Zealand after helping his mother, 85, to die.

She died in 2006, and Davison wrote a book about it called 'Before We Say Goodbye'. New Zealand police arrested him after the book was published.
