Parliament said it would place former Transport Minister and ANC MP, Dipuo Peters, on suspension from Tuesday.
This is after the Western Cape High Court dismissed her urgent application on Monday, to stop the implementation of her suspension from all duties in Parliament.
The move comes after the Joint Committee on Ethics and Members’ Interests found that she had breached the Code of Ethical Conduct in her former portfolio as Minister of Transport.
Parliament said a complaint was lodged against the Minister by #UniteBehind leader and activist, Zackie Achmat, who, among others, claimed that Peters “was neglectful in her previous portfolio as Minister of Transport for failing to appoint a Group CEO of the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA)”.
Parliamentary spokesperson, Molotho Mothapo, said the complaint also alleged that Peters dismissed the Prasa Board, seemingly because it had uncovered R14 billion in irregular expenditure and instituted investigations into corruption at the SOE.
He said after deliberations, the Ethics Committee found that Peters’ failure to appoint a Group CEO breached items 4.1.3 and 4.1.4 of the code in that she failed to act on all occasions in accordance with the public trust placed in her.
This failure to appoint a Group CEO after the PRASA Board had commissioned a recruitment process resulted in a financial loss of R1 767,000.
Parliament said Peters would be placed on suspension from 30 January which is expected to last until 28 March.
