Western Cape police have confirmed that an inquest docket had been opened after a 63-year-old man was found shot to death at a beach on Hermanus.
This followed widespread reports on Thursday that the embattled former CEO of Steinhoff, Markus Jooste, had reportedly died, a day he was slapped with a massive fine by the Financial Sector Conduct Authority following an investigation.
WC police spokesperson, Lieutenant-Colonel Malcom Pojie, said the docket was opened by Hermanus SAPS.
“Police were activated to attend to a shooting incident at around 14.40 at Kwaaiwater Beach in Hermanus.
“The deceased succumbed to a fatal gunshot wound after arrival at a private hospital,” he said.
SAPS did not release the name of the deceased but News 24 reported that it had confirmed Jooste’s death.
Moneyweb reported that the Financial Sector Conduct Authority (FSCA) said in a statement on Wednesday that it had issued a penalty of R475 million on former Steinhoff International boss Markus Jooste following an investigation.
The penalty included a contribution of R10 million to reimburse the FSCA for reasonable costs incurred in connection with the investigation as well as interest at a rate of 11.75%.
The FSCA did not impose a penalty on former Steinhoff finance chief, Dirk Schreiber, despite finding that he had contravened the Financial Markets Act (FMA).
