KwaZulu-Natal Transport MEC Willies Mchunu says the three-year prison sentence of culpable homicide on Durban businessman, Sifiso Zulu, will serve as an important lesson to motorists.
Mchunu says the department welcomes Zulu's imprisonment.
He said it is clear evidence that the courts are now taking seriously cases relating to transgressions of road regulations.
42-year-old Zulu, the former head of the Durban Chamber of Commerce, was convicted in April 2010 of jumping a red robot and crashing into a bakkie, killing two members of the Souls Harbour Church and injuring eight others.
Tha accident took place in March 2008.
On Saturday, Zulu handed himself in at the Westville prison to start his three-year sentence.
