The Asset Forfeiture Unit has obtained a restraining order for assets valued at R75 million of SAPS officials implicated in the so-called Blue Light tender scandal.
The seizure order led to the attachment of 19 immovable properties and 115 vehicles, following operations on Friday in Sandton, Pretoria, Boksburg, Springs, and Sasolburg.
The spokesperson for the NPA's Investigative Directorate, Sindisiwe Seboko, said the former police officials are accused of receiving material benefits from a service provider who was awarded a R65 million rand contract to supply and fit blue lights and sirens to Gauteng police vehicles.
This amount escalated to present-day estimates of R121 million. “Investigations are ongoing to trace further assets,” Seboko said.
The former SAPS members charged include former acting National Commissioner, Kgomotso Phahlane, and eight other former officers, as well as businessman, Vimpie Manthatha, the sole director of Traffic Law Enforcement PTY (LTD).
Seboko said they would be back in court again on 2 November.
