Former City of Cape Town mayoral committee member for housing Malusi Booi and four of his nine co-accused were granted bail of R250 000 each in the Cape Town magistrates court on Tuesday.
Booi, Abdul Kader, Mohammed Amod, Randall Mullins, and Brenda Mullins were granted R250 000 bail, while Suraya Manuel was released on bail of R150 000, and Thuli Imgib, Nomvuyo Mnyaka, Lorna Mdoda, and Siphokazi September were granted bail of R25 000 each.
Booi and his co-accused were arrested last Wednesday and face a string of charges that include racketeering, forgery, and conspiracy to commit fraud, among others for their alleged involvement in R1 billion tender fraud within the City of Cape Town's Human Settlements directorate.
All of their bail conditions prohibit them from traveling outside of the country and their respective provinces until the case is finalised.
They are expected back in court on the 16 October and will appear alongside Cape Town's alleged construction mafia boss, Ralph Stanfield and his wife Nicole for their alleged role in the tender fraud.
Booi is accused of receiving gratification from an "enterprise" run by the Stanfield's which the state alleges acted in concert and common purpose with each other and "various other persons" to contravene the Prevention of Organised Crime Act (POCA), through a pattern of racketeering activities related to the unlawful obtaining of tenders.
