A former treasurer of the South African Bank of Athens has been sentenced to two life terms for shooting his father to death in his sleep and later killing his estranged wife.
Vincenzo Pietropaolo, 65, was sentenced in the Gauteng High Court on Monday, to a further 26 years imprisonment for the 2017 murders.
The National Prosecuting Authority said Judge Ratha Mokgoatlheng remarked that despite Pietropaolo’s age, the court considered the horrendous manner by which both victims were killed and the fact that he had shown no remorse, that a sentence of life imprisonment was appropriate.
The NPA said Pietropaolo killed his 90-year-old father, Pasqualino, whom he shot in his sleep in March 2017 in what was initially believed to be a failed house robbery.
In November the same year, he killed his estranged wife, Manuela, shooting her nine times, during an argument.
He was arrested on the night of the murder after members of the Brackenhurst Community Policing Forum responded to the gunshots and traced Pietropaolo to the complex where he stayed.
The NPA said he was found guilty of double murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances, unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, as well as defeating the ends of justice.
The sentences were ordered to run concurrently.
