A former general in the South African National Defence Force appeared in court on Thursday on four counts of fraud involving an amount of R2.1 million.

The National Prosecuting Authority said 67-year-old former general Mendis Modlane, was granted bail of R10 000 bail, while co-accused and company director, Mugisha Mwali, 59, was granted bail in the amount of R5 000.

His company, Phomolo Enterprises, is also charged in the matter.

NPA spokesperson, Lumka Mahanjana, said Mwali and his company face one count of fraud.

The charges relate to the procurement of “3000 heat-resistant buffs” and “3000 military goggles” to the value of R2.2 million, wherein Phomolo Enterprises was appointed to supply and deliver the said items for three rotations starting on 16 January 2016.

Mahanjana said the two handed themselves over to police on Wednesday.

She said the state did not oppose their bail application and the matter was postponed to 17 July.
