JOHANNESBURG, August 23 (ANA) – Five trade unions are expected to sign a three-year wage agreement with the Steel and Engineering Industries Federation of South Africa (SEIFSA) on Wednesday.
The agreement will be signed by Solidarity, the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa), United Association of South Africa (Uasa), Metal and Electrical Workers union of South Africa (Mewusa), and the SA Equity Workers’ Association (Saewa) at a press conference.
Deputy general-secretary of Solidarity’s Metal and Engineering Industry, Marius Croucamp said the agreement was reached after four months of “intensive negotiations”.
In July, Numsa warned of a looming strike in the engineering sector. The union demanded a 15 percent wage increase across the board “based on the actual rate which a worker is earning, not on the minimum”.
