Five suspects have been shot and killed in Mariannhill, west of Durban.
KZN police say they received information about the whereabouts of some wanted suspects.
Spokesperson Robert Netshiunda says when officers spotted them along Abbot Francis Road and ordered them to pull over, the gang opened fire.
He says one of the suspects was being sought in connection with various crimes, including murder, robbery, and hijacking.
"He was also linked to the Mariannhill scrapyards murder crime scenes where five people were shot and killed in two separate incidents in February this year', Netshiunda said.
No police members were injured during the incident.
