Five people were killed in a multi-vehicle pile-up on the N3 between Hilton and Cedara in Kwazulu Natal on Easter Monday.
KZN Transport officials said 41 vehicles were involved, and included several trucks, eight minibus taxis, and 22 cars were involved.
During the hours-long traffic chaos, the Durban-bound side was also closed for recovery efforts, and vehicles were diverted.
Provincial Transport Department spokesperson, Kwanele Ncalane, said emergency teams were on the scene until into the night to monitor the situation and re-open the route.
"This multi-disciplinary team has had to work hard in removing the wreckages of five trucks, eight minibus taxis, and twenty-two light motor vehicles which were involved in the pile-up," he said.
KwaZulu Natal MEC for Transport, Sipho Hlomuka, extended condolences to the families of the deceased.
"As provincial authorities, we are hugely disappointed with the fatal crashes recorded during this Easter weekend," he lamented.
