The Independent Police Investigative Directorate said five SAPS investigators in Vredenburg on the West Coast were arrested on Wednesday on a charge of murder.
IPID spokesperson, Ndileka Cola, said the arrests related to the death of Jason Heyns in October.
She said it’s alleged that the officers had assaulted him during an arrest and took him to the hospital for medical attention.
“The deceased was immediately transferred by the Vredenburg Hospital to Groote Schuur Hospital due to the severity of his injuries. Seven days later he died in hospital,” she said.
Ncola said that SAPS had failed to report this incident as required by the IPID Act and that they were informed through the Heyn’s family early in November.
She said following an investigation IPID identified and later arrested the SAPS members.
They are due to appear in court on Thursday on a charge of murder.
