Five cash-in-transit robbers killed in shootout with police

SAPS

Police killed five cash-in-transit robbers and arrested two others following a shootout at a "safe house" in Gauteng.

Spokesperson, Colonel Brenda Muridili, said some of the money stolen during the robbery of a cash-in-transit vehicle at Dawn Park near Springs on Wednesday was recovered, while four firearms, ammunition and three vehicles were seized.

She said the drama began when they received reports of an unknown number of suspects who robbed security guards of an undisclosed amount of money before fleeing, leaving one of their vehicles ablaze.

The Sedibeng Tactical Response Team and Ekhurhuleni SWAT Team followed up on intelligence which led them to Klipoortjie on Carol Avenue.

"On arrival at the identified safe house a shootout ensued between the suspects and the police," Muridili said.

She said the vehicle seized from the scene were hijacked in separate incidents in Springs, Midrand and Boksburg North, earlier this year.

National Police Commissioner, General Khehla Sitole, commended the members for their work.

"With the build-up to the festive season, there will be heightened vigilance and prioritisation of cash-in-transit robberies, especially in Gauteng where it is more prevalent," he said.
