The Department of Basic Education says the start of the 2014 school year is progressing smoothly.
Department spokesperson, Panyza Lesufi, says their provisional report, up until 9am, indicated that everything went off smoothly.
He said 99% of textbooks had been delivered to schools on time, and the remaining 1% would be delivered within 10 days.
Lesufi says a few minor issues were reported, such as some parents waiting until the first day of school to register their children.
He says the department's also monitoring the distribution of teachers in some schools in the Eastern Cape.
A few schools had suffered damage from storms, vandalism and theft over the holidays, but the department had teams on standby to fix these problems and avoid disruptions.
