A firefighter from the Overberg fire services, fighting a wildfire in the Barrydale area, died on Sunday in the line of duty.
The Western Cape Shadow Minister for Environment Affairs, Anton Bredell, says Melio van Rooy made the ultimate sacrifice during fire suppression operations.
He says this is the second firefighter they have lost this season.
The Barrydale fire, also known as the Brandrivier fire, started burning a week ago in the mountains and continues to burn.
All role players remain on the scene and efforts to contain the fire are ongoing.
Bredell says there are also two firefighters from the Overstrand district who were injured at a fire near Gansbaai.
One was taken to hospital for observation while the other sustained second degree burns to his hand and arms.
Residents and visitors are encouraged to take every precaution when it comes to fire in the province as conditions remain at high risk.
