A group of students who embarked on a walk to raise bursary funding for students that are in need say they have already raised R7m in just 15 days.
The Feet4Fees students from Witwaterstrand and University of Johannesburg started their walk on 1 December. They reached Cradock by Thursday and were expected to arrive at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University on Monday.
Team leader, Reuben Oosthuysen, said they received donations of about R300 000 in cash and the rest in pledges towards the bursary initiative.
Reuben said, "for the next five years we have created bursaries for a number of students."
"There are no NMMU students this year, but obviously next year we are hoping to be bigger and include a whole lo more people," Reuben said, "We have partnered with study trust, a bursary and registration organisation., so they manage the bursaries and the funds."
The Feet4Fees comes in light of the Fess Must Fall movement, "At the end of the day everyone on the team is for accessible education, so we are working towards the same goal."
Their goal is to raise R1m in cash at the end of the 20 days.
