Farmer, suspect wounded in FS shootout

File

Free State police have arrested a 25-year-old undocumented foreign national who was wounded after allegedly killing a private security officer, and engaging in a shootout with farmers in the Fouriesburg area.

Warrant Officer Mmako Mophiring, said the 56-year-old security officer had responded to a report of trespassing on Marman Farm on Tuesday, when it’s believed that he was overpowered and killed.

He was found with a gunshot wound to the neck and his firearm was missing.

Mophiring said farmers in the vicinity responded to the situation and during the pursuit of the suspect a shootout ensued.

He said one of the farmers was hit by a bullet in the hip and rushed to Bethlehem Hospital, while the suspect was also wounded in the leg and was admitted to a local hospital.

Mophiring said he is detained on a charge of murder, two counts of attempted murder, robbery of firearm, possession of unlicensed firearm, and being in the country illegally.

He is expected to appear before the Fouriesburg Magistrate Court once discharged from hospital.
