Farm worker arrested in connection with Griekwastad farm murder


Griekwastad police have arrested a farm worker who shot and killed his employer yesterday following a heated argument.

The suspect also shot and wounded a 26-year-old man as he fled in the farmer's bakkie.

Northern Cape Provincial police spokesperson, Brigadier, Mohale Ramatseba, said the fatal shooting occurred on Tuesday on the Bonteheuwel Farm outside Griekwastad.

He says the 35-year-old farmer was shot in the chest with a point 22 rifle.

After the fatal shooting, the suspect sped off with the victim`s Ford Ranger bakkie.

Ramatseba says when police were notified they gave chase, the suspect overturned the bakkie and tried to flee on foot.

Police managed to arrest him and confiscated the rifle. The serial number was filed off.

The suspect is expected to appear before the local Magistrates court soon facing charges of murder and attempted murder.


The Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in the Northern Cape, Lieutenant General Risimati Shivuri has commended members of Griekwastad who reacted swiftly leading to the arrest of the suspect and recovery of the rifle.


Police investigations are continuing.
