National Police Commissioner, Rhia Phiyega, says the number of farm murders has decreased in the last four years.
She was speaking at the SA Human Rights Commission's public hearings on Safety and Security in farming communities in Gauteng on Monday.
According to the police's presentation at the hearing, farm murders decreased between 2010 and 2013.
It showed that 71 farm murders were recorded during 2010/2011 in 665 incidents.
The SAPS said this fell to 56 murders in 514 incidents in the 2011/2012 financial years.
Meanwhile, the Institute for Security Studies said farm attacks were not racially motivated.
Researcher, Johan Burger, said racial insults were sometimes used during the commission of such crimes, but this did not mean race or politics were the motives for farm attacks.
