Police have intercepted a kidnapping syndicate after setting up a sting operation in the Thohoyandou Policing area of Polokwane.
Police report that the suspects demanded a multi-million rand ransom from the family members of a businessman they kidnapped.
After they ordered the family to drop the ransom money at a particular point in Polokwane, police members monitored the drop-off point until around 1 o'clock on Thursday when the transaction started.
Police approached the suspects and ordered them to surrender, but they sped off and a vehicle chase lasting 43 kilometres along the R81 ensued.
The suspects started shooting at the Police who returned fire.
The getaway car then crashed off the side of the road. One suspect managed to escape and fled, the second suspect was arrested.
