Two women who were employed as teachers for 11 years received suspended jail sentences for submitting fraudulent documents to the Mpumalanga Education Department.
Nonjabulo Mabuza (47) and Sibongile Khuzwayo (50) were sentenced in the Volksrust Regional Court on Thursday to ten years imprisonment each after they pleaded guilty to and were convicted of fraud.
However, National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson, Monica Nyuswa, said the sentences were wholly suspended for five years.
She said Mabuza and Khuzwayo applied for teaching posts and were appointed in July 2006 and assigned to two schools.
However, she said around 2017, the Mpumalanga Department of Education became suspicious about the two teachers and asked them to resubmit their qualifications.
“In their applications for employment, Khuzwayo submitted a fraudulent senior certificate of a person who had passed away and Mabuza submitted a fraudulent Bachelor of Education degree purportedly issued by the University of Pretoria,” Nyuswa said.
They resigned but were subsequently charged.
Nyyswa said the Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions, Advocate Patrick Nkuna, had applied for a confiscation order of their pension funds valued at R600 000 each.
