Several motorists escaped severe injuries on Thursday night following a massive explosion on the road between Delmas and Leandra.
ER24 said it is believed that a truck, allegedly carrying explosive materials, caught alight and exploded shortly afterwards.
Spokesperson, Russel Meiring, said when paramedics arrived on the scene shortly after 10 pm they found a crater spanning several metres in the middle of the road with debris from the truck spread across the entire scene.
“Medics assessed the motorists and truck driver on the scene and found that no-one sustained any injuries, although some were visibly shaken,” he said.
Meiring said it was understood that the driver noticed flames on the trailer while driving and was able to stop and exit the truck.
He said the driver also warned other motorists of the impending danger before the massive blast.
The matter is under investigation by local authorities.
